When Every Minute Counts

Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft are opening new possibilities for emergency response—and bringing greater attention to the components that help protect critical aircraft systems.

Hyde County Emergency Medical Services, Code Blue Resources, and Pivotal deployed an eVTOL aircraft to bring a trained paramedic directly to patients in rural North Carolina. During one of two live 911 responses, the paramedic arrived approximately 20 minutes before the ground ambulance, allowing advanced care to begin while additional responders were still traveling. Pivotal’s announcement highlights the potential for this approach in communities where waterways and difficult terrain extend travel times.

At Sealing Devices, we see developments like this as a reminder that the future of flight depends on careful engineering at every level—including seals, gaskets, and the materials surrounding sensitive electronics.

Protecting the Systems Behind the Mission

For engineers developing eVTOL aircraft, compact designs and weight constraints add complexity to environmental protection. Batteries, avionics, sensors, and power electronics must be evaluated for exposure to moisture, dust, vibration, pressure changes, and thermal cycling. These are among the application challenges we help manufacturers address through our sealing, shielding, venting, and thermal management solutions.

From our perspective, several component considerations deserve attention early in development:

  • Environmental sealing: Gaskets and seals help limit moisture and contaminant ingress. Material selection should reflect the enclosure design, operating conditions, and required sealing performance.
  • EMI shielding: Conductive gaskets and other shielding materials help engineers address electromagnetic interference around sensitive electronics.
  • Thermal management: Thermal interface materials support heat transfer between electronic components and cooling structures.
  • Pressure equalization: Protective vents help manage enclosure pressure differences while resisting water and dust ingress.
  • Cushioning and vibration control: Selected foam and sponge materials can provide cushioning and vibration damping where the application requires it.

Our product portfolio brings these capabilities together, helping engineering teams evaluate protection requirements as part of the complete assembly.

Supporting Aerospace Engineers from Design Through Production

At Sealing Devices, we work with customers to translate application requirements into material and component choices. Our applications engineering team supports material selection and design questions, while our fabrication and value-added services support prototyping, production, kitting, and supply chain needs. Our AS9100D and ISO 9001:2015 certifications support that commitment to quality. Learn more about our engineering and manufacturing capabilities.

The Hyde County missions offer an early example of how electric aircraft can help responders reach patients sooner. For us, they also reinforce the value of bringing sealing and component protection into the design conversation early.
